I Agree With Bossman

The Ghastly Ones Interview'd

All questions answered by Norman "Baron Shivers" (Drums) of The Ghastly Ones.

(John) What makes you guys want to play spooky surf tunes? What kind of sparked the whole beginning of it?
(Baron) Growing up I loved The Munsters and religiously watched Creature Features on late night TV. Both shows had surfy sounding theme songs. The Deadly Ones and Frankie Stein and The Ghouls where two novelty “studio” groups that had spooky instrumental records in the 60’s, and occasionally surf bands including The Ventures had a spooky song here and there, but no one had even done an all spooky surf band, so The Ghastly Ones were born!

(John) What is your latest CD you came out with?
(Baron) UNEARTHED is the latest. It’s kind of a “best of” with re-recorded cuts from our first album plus several bonus tracks never before released. All of the songs were re-tracked with the addition of spooky organ by our newest member Dave Capt. Clegg” on keys.

Click the CD to read more about it.

(John) What are some of your biggest influences?
(Baron) Musically, The Ventures, Dick Dale of course, Paul Johnson of the Belairs, The Fender IV, The Del-Aires from Horror of Party Beach just to name a few. 60’s horror and exploitation films of the 60’s play a big part too… Hammer Films, Mario Bava, Russ Meyer, Ray Dennis Steckler, etc.

(John) Dick Dale or Roky Erickson?
(Baron) Both. Dick Dale defined super fast double picking that’s associated with high energy surf and I love Roky’s 13th Floor Elevators. His song “Night of the Vampire” is killer.

(John) Do you ever want to travel around the U.S? Because most of your shows are around California, right?
(Baron) We play mostly in California, but we’ve played on the east coast, Atlanta and even overseas in Japan. We would like to tour more actually but it’s very expensive to tour.

(John) So what's next with the Ghastly Ones? Are you working on a new CD?
(Baron) Yes we are! We’re hoping for an August 2009 release.

(John) What are some of your favorite bands of all time?
(Baron) There are many, some I already mentioned above, but we also love tons of obscure groups off of the Back from the Grave, Nuggets, and Surf Creature comps. Those comps are a must have!

(John) Any last words?
(Baron) Stay spooky.

If I had 4 more thumbs, I would give this CD 5 thumbs up!

Remember E.A.P

Edgar Allen Poe was born on January 19, 1809. He died October 7, 1849. His parents died when he was very young and was taken in by "The Allens" (which by the way had never formally adapted him) He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone.

Here is a list of some truly outstanding pieces of work:
1) Alone
2) The Raven
3) Spirits of the Dead
